A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy - Positive or Negative - Which Will You Choose?

By Della Menechella

A self-fulfilling prophecy. Is this some New Age mumbo jumbo, or could it really have an impact on your business success and life? The answer is yes – it already does have a major impact on what you are able to achieve. As a female entrepreneur, it is critical to understand how this Universal Law is working for or against you.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

So, what is a self-fulfilling prophecy? It can be summed up in the profound words of Henry Ford:

“If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

What this phrase is really saying is that if you put self-imposed limitations on your life, that is what you are going to experience. On the other hand, if you think you have unlimited possibilities and can achieve whatever level of success you can imagine, then that is also what you will experience.

Life is neutral. It doesn’t really care what you think, but you are going to experience the results of what you think. If you take positive action to achieve success, but in your heart you don’t really believe it will work, then you won’t be successful. Your thoughts are more important than your actions.

Your thoughts are more important than your actions.

Law of Cause and Effect

There is a powerful universal law called the Law of Cause and Effect (also known as the Law of Karma). This law states that whatever you think deep down inside is going to cause matching conditions in your life. In this lifetime, you will reap the seeds that you have sown with your thoughts.

Cause and Effect

If you engage in a lot of negative thinking, then your self-fulfilling prophecy is going to attract many difficult situations into your life. This is going to cause you to believe more strongly that life is hard and that only some people can be happy, and, unfortunately, you aren’t one of them. This will continue to perpetuate your cycle of negative thinking and equivalent dismal results.

It is critical that you understand that your regular pattern of thinking becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in your life. It doesn’t matter how nice you are or how much you care about people and want to help them. If your self-fulfilling prophecy is negative, you are going to attract negative circumstances into your life.

Another important point for you to understand is that the phrase says, “self-fulfilling prophecy,” not “other-fulfilling prophecy.” Regardless of what anyone else thinks you can or can’t achieve, their opinions don’t affect you. Unless, of course, you let what others say cause you to doubt yourself and your abilities. It doesn’t matter what other people think you can achieve. It only matters what YOU think you can achieve.

Changing Your Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

So, if you are stuck in a cycle of negative thinking, how do you go about breaking out of it? You start by challenging your thoughts and words.

Pay attention to your self-talk – The first step in having a positive self-fulfilling prophecy is to begin to get clear about what you believe about life. Listen to your internal conversations and listen to what you say to others. Your words are an indication of how you honestly feel about what you can achieve in your business and life. Many of my female clients say a lot of negative things to themselves every day. That constant negativity is one of the biggest reasons why they have been struggling to achieve success.

Transform your self-talk – If you find that you are engaging in negative self-talk, then challenge it and turn it into positive self-talk. Let’s say that you are going to be meeting with a prospective client, and you tell yourself, “I’ll never get this person to become my client. There isn’t really anything special about what I do. There are a lot of people who do the same thing as me and they are probably more qualified than I am.” (Does this sound familiar? So many of the women that I work with beat themselves up on a regular basis with conversations like this.) If you would like support on transforming your self-talk, click here.

Woman Achieving Goals

This type of thinking is going to kill your chances of signing up this prospect to work with you. You must transform this thinking into positive self-talk, such as, “I am very qualified to work with this client. My unique combination of experience and skills makes me very good at what I do. This person would be lucky to have me.”

Say daily positive affirmations– Begin to change the way you think about yourself by putting good ideas into your brain. Make it a practice to say positive affirmations throughout your day. “I am now joyously working with my right and perfect clients and customers. I am a blessing to them, and they are a blessing to me.”

Use healing statements – Use healing statements such as, “I deserve to be successful,” or “I am worthy to receive the best that life has to offer.”  Not feeling worthy or good enough is another common belief that many women who I work with have. You want to start believing that you deserve all the success and abundance that you desire. And you want to believe that you deserve success just the way you are right now.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy – Negative or Positive?

Whatever your self-fulfilling prophecy has been up until now, it does not matter. You have the power to change it. If you want to achieve success, then you must expect that you will be successful. Remember, the Law of Cause and Effect is always waiting to make sure that whatever you think about yourself, comes true.  Give it powerful, positive directions on a consistent basis, and you will be delighted with the results.
